How can Minerva Counselling help you?

Many people can find that it is a relief be able to talk to someone who is not involved in a situation. And as the relationship between the counsellor and the client progresses, so does mutual respect, trust and understanding. Often clients find themselves able to discuss things that they feel they could never discuss with even their closest and most intimate friends.

Working together, the client and counsellor can then look at patterns of behaviour or perception or links with events in the past, so that it can become possible to look at positive options for dealing with them.

How long does counselling last for?

Individual sessions last for 50 minutes and typically take place weekly, but this can be varied by agreement. Courses of counselling can run from as few as 3 sessions to more than 50 sessions. We will review progress periodically with you, and help you decide what is best for you. The final decision about having further sessions always rests with you.

What happens in the first session?

This will depend on need but, usually we will spend 10 minutes or so dealing with the 'housekeeping', including:

  • contact details
  • confidentiality
  • time and place for future sessions
  • agreement on fees
  • what happens if either side cancels a session
  • a brief description of what you might expect from counselling
  • and so on.

It is helpful for both client and counsellor to share an understanding of what is expected of each of them in the counselling relationship.

There are however some things which Minerva Counselling cannot do

We cannot offer practical advice, although we may be able to suggest where you may get such advice if necessary.

We cannot solve your problems for you, but we can try to help you to solve them.

We cannot guarantee any particular outcome, but we can try to help you to achieve your solution.

We do not offer a quick fix.

The Counsellors

All our counsellors are professionally qualified and are members of at least one professional body and are subject to the Ethical Frameworks of their professional bodies, including:

BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy)

UKCP (United Kingdom Council for Pyschotherapy)

From time to time, we may also take on counselling students who are approaching the end of their training, a requirement of whcih is a supervised placement with a counselling agency.

Training

At Minerva, we can also offer training on gender issues and gender diversity awareness. This can be of particular benefit to companies who may have employees experiencing gender issues. We can also offer presentations to colleges, schools and other academic organisations.

We are always to looking at ways to extend our training packages, so if you have an individual need, it is always worth contacting us.
